on Nov 23rd, 2007New Zealand to Fat Immigrants: Stay Out!

New Zealand Immigration policy will reject you if you are too fat. An article in the Telegraph highlights a fat british couple trying to emigrate to Kiwiland. The husband shed enough weight to be allowed in, but his wife has yet to be able to follow him. While the article takes a pity-the-couple stance, I applaud the New Zealand Immigration officials for protecting Kiwis from the high medical burden of an increasingly obese population.

From the article: “The immigration department’s focus is [that] it cannot afford to import people into the country who are going to be a significant drain on our health resources.”

“You can see the logic in assessing if there is a significant health cost associated with this individual and that would be a reason for them not coming in.”

I guess there won’t be many Americans moving there anytime soon.

    Good on ‘em.
I’m of the opinion that fat people should be charged each time they go to hospital or their GP because of something caused by their excess weight/poor diet/lack of will power.
    (Similarly for smokers)
