I recently stumbled across a piece of writing by Richard A. Muller called ‘The Physics Diet.’ Dr Muller is a Professor in the Department of Physics at UC Berkeley and wrote this small piece on dieting from a thermodynamic perspective.

It’s the simplest diet ever and works because you can’t beat the laws of thermodynamics.

Wow, physicist invents crash diet, exhibits disordered eating.

When did not eating lunch because you’re a fat-ass become an eating disorder?

“How to cope with the hunger? I attempted to enjoy it. I thought of the movie Lawrence of Arabia, in which T.E. Lawrence says, ‘The trick is not minding that it hurts.’ I told myself that the mild ache was only the sensation of evaporating fat. That interpretation has some basis in physics. When you lose weight, most of your fat is converted to the gases carbon dioxide and water vapor, and so you get rid of fat by breathing it out of your body.” Nuff said.

Also, disordered eating is not the same as having an eating disorder. The so-called “Physics Diet”, or crash diet as the rest of the world calls it, is hardly a new idea. It is also know to be an ineffective and dangerous weight loss plan. I would love to get an update from this guy in 5 years time as I would be surprised if he hadn’t regained the weight, plus a little extra.
