What Does Color Blindness Looks Like?

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

According to wikipedia, color blindness occurs in about 8% of men. Contrary to the popular conception, it does not mean that a man sees gray, but rather that he can’t tell the difference between some colors (most commonly red and green).

What does the world look like with this condition? Paul Martin at critiquewall.com has posted an article showing some photoshopped images of vision through color blindness.

Ted Talk on Visualizing the Human Side of the Internet, by Jonathan Harris

Friday, July 20th, 2007

While normally people wanting to visualize ‘how humans feel on the web’ would be a little too hippie for me, this Jonathan Harris talk at TED makes it useful. Not only does he talk about what can be done, but he’s built two examples himself, the Universe and We Feel Fine. Beware: this way lies procrastination.

Hypnotic Self-Organizing Transportation Network Simulator

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

ChemicalBurn is a hypnotic screensaver for OS X, written by Michael Ash, that simulates a self-optimizing network. It randomly lays out nodes on the screen then has each attempt to route packages to the others. The more frequently routes are used by packages, the faster the connection becomes.

I lost several hours yesterday tweaking the various settings and seeing how they affected the network — if you want to procrastinate yourself into a trance, this is an excellent way to do it.
